Austria's Freedom Party, led by Jörg Haider, won a surprise victory in regional polls on 7 March 2004, benefiting from huge losses by Wolfgang Schüssel's conservative People's Party, which dropped from 20.7% to 11.6% share of the vote. The result comes after a series of heavy losses for the Freedom Party and may bode well for elections to the European Parliament.
