Preliminary government figures show that German industrial orders grew an unexpected 3.3% in March 2009, driven by an increase in demand from abroad.

Germany's economics ministry said the seasonally adjusted rise did not even begin to make up for recent months, with orders for goods falling by 14.5% in the first quarter of 2009. The ministry said, though, that the latest numbers showed the trend had changed.
