As the bank of the European Union, the European Investment Bank (EIB) finances investment supporting the implementation of EU strategic priorities. One of these is to promote the establishment of a competitive, knowledge-based economy capable of sustainable growth. Since the year 2000, the EIB has been financing investment in research, development and innovation, education, and information and communication technology – the pillars of the knowledge economy. The EIB has built up a decade of experience in the knowledge economy, lending close to €90 in the period 2000-2009, of which €18bn in 2009 alone. |
