The report was prepared, on behalf of the European Railway Agency (ERA) by the Centre for Rail Human Factors, Institute for Occupational Ergonomics, University of Nottingham.

The overall aim of the work was to provide a generic and high level overview of human functions in frontline railway operations, and to identify activities associated with these functions that may influence safety. The overview was intended to reflect all European railway organisations independent of job role, the technical system or the country.
