European leaders named the Cypriot Christos Stylianides as the special EU coordinator on Ebola during the European Council which took place in October 2014.

Mr Stylianides had been previously appointed as the new Commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management of the first European Commission led by Jean-Claude Juncker.
