Britain has put talks on future financing of the European Union at the heart of its six month Presidency of the European Union which began on 1 July 2005. In a speech on 30 June 2005 that accompanied a White Paper detailing priorities for the Presidency, UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the UK would use the rest of 2005 to try and reach agreement over the 2007-2013 budget, after the collapse of talks at the European Council in Brussels, 16-17 June 2005.
