European Commission Secretary-General David Williamson has always been known as a plain-speaking sort of chap.

And while others hunt around for a complex political rationale to break down resistance to calls for each of the larger member states to give up one of their two Commissioners, he has come up with one perfectly straight-forward reason why the numbers should be reduced.

It is absurd for the bigger member states to continue arguing for the retention of two Commissioners, says Williamson, because as they tend to come from different sides of the political spectrum, they cancel each other out in debates and neutralise their member state's contribution.

Not that Commissioners represent any particular member state, of course...
