Book abstract:

Forthcoming entrance to the EU of the Republic of Cyprus (the Southern Greek Cypriot part) without the Turkish Cypriot North may be seen by many as the necessary catalyst for unification of the island. It has certainly concentrated the minds of their respective leaders Glafcos Clerics and Rauf Denktash and talks between the two sides have resumed.

It is in this context, that a second edition of this publication has been produced - updating the situation since the 2001 edition and including some additional official reference documents from the United Nations, the Greek Cypriot National Council, the Turkish Cypriot authorities and the Harvard Group. It also provides commentary on the role of the UN and the problems presented by the illegal occupation by Turkish forces in the North. The contribution made by the EU the latest arena in which the duel for Cyprus has been contested by Turkey and Greece is examined and the prospects for a peaceful solution discussed. Clearly, the Cyprus issue might well be a struggle which will have wider implications for Europe and plans for further expansion.

The work will interest all those who wish to grasp the essentials of the Cyprus conflict.

Clement Dodd was latterly professorial fellow in politics with special reference to Turkey in the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
