Summary:Staff Working Document published by the European Commission on 14 July 2023, comprising the outcome of a stocktaking exercise carried out ot ensure that the right enforcement tools are available and used to make the Law of the European Union (EU) work in practice. Further information:The report in the form of Staff Working Document has identified ways to further improve the Commission’s working methods for the enforcement of EU law and includes recommendations on six strands of work: delivering the strategic approach; handling infringements efficiently and revamping performance management; facilitating the treatment of complaints; making the monitoring of regulations more systematic; increasing support to Member States; and stepping up transparency. Since 2017, the focus on monitoring the progress of infringement cases and other enforcement activities has been according to a Communication on Applying Community Law (2007) and a related Communication adopted in 2016. In 2018, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) recommended that the Commission evaluated its enforcement policy and relevant administrative practices. The intention to carry out that exercise was eventually announced by the Commission in a Communication on Better Regulation (2021), and again in a Communication on Enforcing EU Law (2022). |
