Some of the world’s biggest steelmakers are backing a legal challenge against the European Union’s efforts to institute rules to limit carbon dioxide emissions, in one of the strongest signs yet of an industry backlash against government initiatives to curb global warming.

Lakshmi Mittal’s ArcelorMittal, ThyssenKrupp of Germany and Tata Steel of India have thrown their weight behind the legal case, which is being assembled by Eurofer, a Brussels-based trade body for the European steel industry.
