Summary: Status Agreement between the European Union and the Republic of Albania concerning the activities of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in Albania. Further information: In October 2017 the Council of the European Union authorised the European Commission to open negotiations with Albania on a status agreement on actions carried out by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in Albania. Negotiations were successfully finalised by the initialling of the draft agreement on 12 February 2018 in Tirana. In June 2018 the Commission presented proposals for the signing and conclusion of the agreement. The signing was approved on 13 July by Council Decision (EU) 2018/1031. The conclusion was approved on 12 February 2019 by Council Decision (EU) 2019/267. Background: Regulation (EU) 2016/1624 provides that the European Border and Coast Guard Agency may coordinate operational cooperation between Member States and third countries with respect to management of the external borders. In that respect, it can carry out actions at the external borders involving one or more Member States and a third country neighbouring at least one of those Member States, subject to the agreement of that neighbouring country. |
