On 27 February 2014, the President of European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, met President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the unification of the country. They discussed bilateral and regional issues such as the recent successful conclusion of the negotiations for an Economic Partnership Agreement with West Africa which will greatly contribute to enhance trade and investment between the EU and Nigeria and about the the challenges to regional security in the Sahel and Central African Republic.
