At a ceremony in Jakarta, Indonesia on the 4 May 2011 chief negotiators from the EU and Indonesia initialled a Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Voluntary Partnership Agreement between the Republic of Indonesia and the European Union.

At the same time the Indonesian Minister of Forestry, Zulkifli Hasan, and the European Commissioner for Trade, Karel De Gucht, issued a Joint Statement welcoming the agreement and endorsing mechanisms to prepare for implementation while the formal ratification process takes place.
