On the 01 March 2017, President Nyusi and leader of the main opposition group Renamo Mr Afonso Dhlakama announced the start of a new phase in the negotiations and decided to set up an international contact group to support the peace process in Mozambique.

For the European Union, these are welcome developments as they underlined the determination by both parties to set aside differences and to work towards peace and reconciliation. The European Union appreciated the recognition of its contribution to this positive outcome and would stand ready to continue supporting the peace process as a member of the contact group and in any way possible.
