Statement by Commissioner Andriukaitis on the entry into force of the new Plant Health Regulation

On 13 December 2016, the European Commission announced the coming into force of a new Plant Health Regulation as a relevant time towards the protection of agriculture, the food chain and the environment in the European Union.

Early detection of plant pests, better action plans for eradication, higher surveillance rules for the import of high risk plants, improved rules for the certification of plant products were among the resolutions taken in order to ensure that possible future damaging effects regarding plant diseases would be tackled efficiently.
