Summary: Report published by the European Commission on 24 May 2022, comprising its first annual State of Schengen Report. Further information: This report identifies existing challenges and recommends priority actions for the way forward as a starting point of the Schengen cycle. This cycle was established with the 2021 Schengen Strategy, which aims to ensure a regular health check on the state of Schengen. The document identifies the key elements of the new governance model for the Schengen area, takes stock of the implementation of the Schengen Strategy overall as well as its individual components and sets out the priorities for the Schengen area in 2022-2023. It also addresses the European Commission's legal obligations to report on the situation as regards the absence of internal border controls, the results of Schengen evaluations, and the state of implementation of recommendations. The report serves as a model for the future: as the first step of the annual Schengen cycle, each future State of Schengen Report should launch a yearly reporting exercise on presenting the state of Schengen, identifying priorities for the year ahead and aiming to ensure discussions on progress made at the end of a given year. The State of Schengen Report should be the basis for increased political dialogue, monitoring, and enforcement of the Schengen acquis. This Communication was adopted by the European Commission on 24 May 2022, and later included in the so-called Schengen package which also comprised other relevant reports. The report was discussed during the third Schengen Forum, which was held on 2 June 2022. |
