European standards have been used for years to help implement single market legislation. Now, fast-moving markets, technologies and processes, particularly in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector, require an equally rapid creation of common technical specifications. New types of standards are, thus, being elaborated and the Commission is examining how to use them to support its policies in areas such as e-signatures.
