The UK government is resisting an important clause in the Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment. The clause will make producers responsible for recycling waste products but the government believes it would be impossible to enforce a system dependent on individual responsibility, leaving the taxpayer to pick up part of the bill. Companies such as Electrolux and Sony have joined up with Friends of the Earth and the European Environmental Bureau to try to make the UK government change its mind before a critical meeting on 10 October 2002.
