Speech: The Netherlands: Sitting on a tram with Biberkopf. Education and the arts in Europe

Like modern art, Europe is open to multiple interpretations said Minister for European Affairs Atzo Nicolai in his opening speech at the Nexus Conference in Berlin. If citizens are to feel European, they need to be sure exactly what Europe is. According to Nicolai, education and the arts play an important role in sharpening the mind and becoming aware of what European culture is or should be. The seminar in Berlin was the second in a series of international conferences during the Dutch EU Presidency culminating in an intellectual summit in December 2004
