Speech: The Netherlands: Managing expectations. Romania’s accession to the European Union

Speaking at the invitation of the European Institute of Romania, the Minister for European Affairs Atzo Nicolai noted that in many new member states of the European Union enthusiasm about accession had given way to disappointment. Governments tend to raise expectations too high. As a result, citizens become disillusioned with Europe. Nicolai stressed that candidate member states should not repeat this mistake
