Spain's King Felipe VI asked acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on the 28 July 2016 to form a government and unblock seven months of political paralysis after a second round of inconclusive elections in June 2016. Mr Rajoy warned on the 2 August 2016 that the country might have to hold a third round of elections, after his Socialist rival Pedro Sánchez refused to back his efforts to form a coalition government. Albert Rivera, the leader of the minority Ciudadanos party, met with Mr Rajoy on the 10 August 2016. He said he would negotiate with his own Ciudadanos deputies in Congress to support Mr Rajoy’s bid to form a government if the interim Prime Minister was prepared to accept six 'essential' measures and one condition. These would include electoral reform and anti-corruption measures. Mr Rajoy said that the Executive Committee of his Popular Party (PP) would vote on whether to accept the deal on the 17 August 2016. |
