The Spanish government was due to approve the future spending plans of the 17 autonomous regions in Spain on the 17 May 2012.

The autonomous regions, which manage schools and hospitals and account for just over half of all public spending, had been identified by the European Commission as posing a risk to Madrid’s chances of meeting its tough deficit reduction target for 2012.
