Abstract: The presence of jihadist networks in Spain on a permanent basis goes back to the early 1990s. From early on, the Spanish police and intelligence agencies monitored the activities of these groups, although the priority during this period in terms of focus and resources was the struggle against the terrorism of ETA. Following the attacks of 11 March 2004, Spain has put in place numerous measures to avoid a repeat of a similar tragedy. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the changes that have taken place since 11 March 2004 within the Spanish security system. It also studies the transformation of the jihadist groups in Spain and their likely future evolution. |
