Solana tries to soothe US

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, has denied reports of a rift between the United States and its European allies over American plans to build a missile defence system. The denial follows a meeting of Nato foreign ministers on 29 May 2001 which failed to give the American plans a clear endorsement.
