Social challenges of economic and monetary union:
This volume comprises the contributions to a colloquium 'Social challenges of Economic and Monetary Union' held by the Belgian Ministry of Social Affairs, in collaboration with the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health and the European Commission in 1998.

The contributions aim to widen the debate about the consequences of EMU to embrace the impact on the European social model and, in particular, on the field of social protection. The issues tackled range from the budgetary constraints imposed by the Maastricht Treaty and the Stability Pact to the influence of the EMU on the financing of social security and industrial relations. The uneasy debate about the fiscal policy of the Member States is also analysed in the volume.
