US super-leaker Edward Snowden has asked nine EU countries for political asylum.

The member states, named in a press release on the 2 July 2013 on the WikiLeaks website, were: Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain.

On the 3 July 2013, Bolivian President Evo Morales' plane was forced to land in Vienna amid suspicions it was harbouring fugitive whistleblower Edward Snowden. Bolivia accused European countries of an 'act of aggression' for refusing to allow its presidential jet into their airspace, amid suggestions US fugitive Edward Snowden was on board.

In an article published in several European newspapers including Le Monde on the 3 July 2012, the WikiLeaks founder and the Secretary General of Reporters Without Borders called on European states to grant asylum the whistleblower who exposed the NSA eavesdropping, for the sake of freedom of the press and of information.

The presidents of Nicaragua, Venezuela and Bolivia have indicated their countries could offer political asylum to US fugitive Edward Snowden.
