Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the lifeblood of European industry. Their smaller size theoretically means they should be nimble enough to respond to market changes and remain competitive. But keeping up in this way is not sustainable in the long term. Like their bigger siblings, SMEs need access to R&D to stimulate innovation and stay ahead of the competition. In-house facilities are often too costly, so the best way is to share.
