The candidate supported by the Social Democrats, Danilo Türk, won the 2nd round of the presidential election on 11th November 2007 in Slovenia. He won 68.26% of the vote beating his rival Alojz Peterle, the candidate supported by the government majority who won 31.74% of the vote.

The government of Slovenia, which takes over the European Union Presidency for the period January-June 2008, decided to seek a parliamentary confidence vote on 19 November 2007 after the crushing defeat of its candidate in the presidential elections.
