Date: 18/07/1996 José Happart may know his Fourons from his Flanders, but he is on less certain ground when it comes to the UK and Ireland. The Belgian Socialist MEP recently tried to upstage Jim Murray, the Irish head of the pan-European consumer organisation BEUC. Murray had just delivered a not unusual critique of the Common Agricultural Policy when Happart, a prominent member of the European Parliament's agriculture committee, retorted: “You only dislike the CAP because we won't let you import cheap food from your former colonies.” Murray was reportedly alarmed that he might be losing his Irish accent and is apparently brushing up his enunciation to remove any erroneous English vowel sounds. |
