An €187 million investment agreement was signed on 21 October 2016 for the Balticconnector, the first gas pipeline connecting Estonia and Finland. The signature was witnessed by the European Commission president and prime ministers of both countries.

The gas interconnector aimed at ending the gas isolation of Finland and helping boosting security of supply. The grant was awarded under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), covering 75% of the construction costs.
