Sergio Mattarella: Sicilian ‘man of the law’ / Sicilian judge elected Italian president

A little-known constitutional court judge, and previous politician and government minister, Sergio Mattarella was elected Italy's new president on the 31 January 2015 after four rounds of voting by lawmakers and regional representatives.

The result was seen as a boost for Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who nominated Mr Mattarella.

He would succeed Giorgio Napolitano, who at 89 was stepping down due to his advanced age.
