Senior British official Julian Priestley, 46, will take over as the Parliament’s new secretary-general

Priestley, currently chef de cabinet to Parliament President Klaus Hänsch, comfortably saw off a late challenge from German colleague Manfred Michel and was unanimously elected by the Parliament's bureau this week to replace Enrico Vinci, who has been in the post since 1986. Meanwhile, the European People's Party has selected Spanish member José María Gil-Robles Gil-Delgado as its candidate to succeed Hänsch. A final decision on the appointment will be taken by the full Parliament in early January.
