Self-rule introduced in Greenland

The Arctic island of Greenland is assuming self-rule, in the latest step towards independence from Denmark, June 2009. The move follows a referendum on greater autonomy in November 2008. It will see Greenland take a greater share of revenues from its natural resources.

Greenland will remain part of the Kingdom of Denmark and subject to its constitution, moving from home rule to self-rule. Greenlanders will now be treated as separate people under international law. Kalaallisut (Greenlandic) will become the official language for the 56,000 inhabitants, many of whom are native Inuit.
