What's this? An English-language journalist up for an award as European of the Year?

Relax, the nominee is Irish, a country which doffs its CAP to Brussels and is not tainted by the anti-EU stigma which blights the profession across the water in the UK.

Tommie Gorman, European correspondent for the Irish national television station RTE was nominated alongside such luminaries as the Irish Premier John Bruton, IGC negotiator Noel Dorr and MEP Mary Banotti by the Irish Council of the European Movement.

Alas for the writing profession, Tommie didn't quite make it. The award ceremony in Dublin this week singled out Bruton.

But Tommie's citation was impressive. “He has brought the importance of membership of the EU to the attention of the Irish public through the clarity and professionalism of his reports,” it said.
