Scottish business leaders were divided on whether Scotland would benefit by becoming independent from the United Kingdom. Business people sent contrasting letters to Scottish newspapers in the closing weeks of the referendum campaign in August 2014. 200 business people backed independence in an open letter published in The Herald on the 28 August 2014 that aimed to counter warnings by 130 industry leaders that the plans would be bad for trade, which had been pubished a day earlier.
