A study by the International Council for Science (ICSU) has found that genetically modified crops are safe to eat, but scientists have concerns over their long-term environmental impact. Another report by the UK's Nuffield Council on Bioethics also gave cautious backing to the development of GM crops, saying they could have significant benefits for developing countries, if properly managed. However, the report goes on to warn that the European Union's proposed labelling regime could damage agriculture in developing countries, many of which lack the infrastructure to separate GM and non-GM crops. |
