Summary:European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) asking the European Commission to uphold and strengthen the ban on cosmetic tests on animals and transition to animal-free safety assessment. Further information:The campaigners argue that the European Union's promised ban on cosmetics tests on animals was yet to be fulfilled, and highlight the existing non-animal tools for assuring safety of those products. The ECI calls on the European Commission to uphold and strengthen the ban and transition to animal-free safety assessment. Actions proposed include changes in the existing legislative framework, the transformation of the EU's chemicals regulation, and the modernisation of science in the EU. The Commission registered the ECI on 30 June 2021. The organisers collected support between August 2021 and August 2022. On 25 January 2023, the organisers submitted the initiative to the Commission for examination and reply. On 25 July, the European Commission published a Communication responding to the initiative. It was published in the Official Journal on 18 August 2023. |
