Article reports that President Nicolas Sarkozy of France came under fire from members of his own right-of-centre party for the summer 2010 assault on illegal Roma camps designed to bolster the government’s credibility on security.

Mr Sarkozy has sparked a national controversy by launching a government offensive against crimes committed by people of foreign origin, after riots broke out in July 2010 in Grenoble fuelled largely by itinerant workers of North African descent.
