Article reports that the French government was scrambling on the 21 October 2009 to avoid the risk of a rebellion among its own party members who were challenging some of Nicolas Sarkozy’s cornerstone reforms as the President embarked on the second half of his five-year mandate.

Lawmakers, including many in the government’s ruling UMP party, have launched an offensive against the 2009 budget bill being debated in parliament as discontent grew over reforms to corporate taxation, local government and over the parlous state of public finances.
