Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov announced on the 12 December 2011 that he would challenge Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Russia's presidential election in March 2012.

Mr Prokhorov’s decision to run came as Alexei Kudrin, a former Russian Finance Minister, said he would support the creation of a liberal party as an alternative to Mr Putin’s United Russia party. The timing fuelled speculation that the politicians were not acting independently but had received a nudge of encouragement from the Kremlin. Was the Kremlin trying to contain growing public dissent in its 'managed' democracy.
