The European Court of Justice ruled on 3 October 2002 that tax breaks for pension schemes should apply across borders. Campaigners hailed the ruling as a move towards breaking down the biggest obstacle to a single pension for workers who move between countries. It could also make it easier for the European Commission to win approval from national governments for its proposals to create a pan-European pension.
