The row over the exploitation of fossil resources in the Mediterranean in May 2017 intensified and the Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and the Greek foreign minister had complained about UN Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide. European newspapers asked what were the real causes behind the row? UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on the 8 May 2017 that the special adviser for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide continued to do his job with the utmost confidence from UNSG Antonio Guterres. UN Secretary General`s Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide said on the 24 May 2017 that he hoped to bring the leaders to an agreement on a new Geneva conference by the end of the week but said there was 'still some distance to cover'. Eide met both leaders separately on the 24 May 2017. |
