Summary: Reports, analyses and information relating to the presidential election held in Romania in November 2019. Further information: The first round of the presidential election was held on 11 November 2019 and the second round on the 24. 13 candidates were in races for the first round of the election. Incumbent Klaus Iohannis of the liberal-conservative PNL and ex-prime minister Viorica Dăncilă of the social democratic PSD won the first round with 36,6 percent and 23,8 percent respectively. The election was fought amid resentment over judicial reforms implemented by the PSD and seen to benefit their politicians. The PSD former leader Liviu Dragnea was notably jailed on corruption charges in May and the PSD-led government also collapsed in a no-confidence vote in October. The electoral results largely confirmed the forecast as Klaus Iohannis won a second term by a landslide. |
