Article reports that Nicolas Sarkozy’s summer 2010 crackdown on crime and Roma migrants had thrown the French president’s government into disarray as ministers openly criticised both his lurch to the right and each other.

Articles also report that France’s Minister for European Affairs, Pierre Lellouche, and Eric Besson, the country's immigration minister, travelled to Brussels on the 31 Aigust 2010 to meet with the European Commissioner in charge of internal affairs, Cecilia Malmström, and European Commissioner for Justice Vivian Reding. The European Commission had stepped up the pressure on the French government to offer an explanation for its actions.

In a Resolution adopted by the European Parliament on the 9 September 2010 MEPs expressed 'deep concern' at recent measures taken by the French authorities and other EU Member States. The Resolution argued on that mass expulsions of Roma people violate EU law as they amount to discrimination on the basis of race. MEPs called on policymakers to avoid 'inflammatory rhetoric' and also criticised the Council and Commission's lack of commitment on the issue.

The European Parliament demanded that France immediately suspend the expulsion of Roma migrants, saying that the mass expulsions are prohibited by EU law. The French government remained defiant on the issue.
