Iceland’s parliament approved a deal on the 28 August 2009 to repay Britain and the Netherlands nearly €4bn lost in Icelandic bank accounts after more than two months of tumultuous debate.

Reykjavik hopes the vote will clear the way for additional international assistance to rebuild the Atlantic island’s shattered economy and accelerate its bid to join the European Union.
