This post-Riga Summit online edition examines some of the major issues discussed by NATO leaders during their meeting in the Latvian capital on 28 and 29 November 2006.
At the top of the Summit agenda was Afghanistan. The commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) between May 2006 and February 2007, General David Richards, looks at the Alliance’s achievements in Afghanistan over the last year. Paul Savereux, a defence policy officer in NATO's Defence Policy and Planning Division, gives a primer on the Comprehensive Political Guidance published by NATO leaders at Riga. Fritz Rademacher of the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies explains the Training Cooperation Initiative launched by the Riga Summit.
The threat of terrorism was very much on the minds of Allied leaders meeting in Riga. Friedrich Steinhäusler of the University of Salzburg makes recommendations of how Allies should counter the terrorist threats they face.
In the interview, the chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Gen. Ray Henault, discusses the military follow-up to the Riga Summit. Gal Luft of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security and Christophe Paillard of the French Ministry of Defence debate whether NATO should play a major role in energy security.
