The UK Government, on 12 July 2012, launched a review of the EU’s competences (the power to act in particular areas conferred on it by the EU Treaties). Examining the balance of the EU’s existing competences was a commitment set out in the Coalition Programme for Government. This review will be an audit of what the EU does and how it affects the UK. It will look at where competence lies, how the EU’s competences are used, and what that means for the UK's national interest.
