Revealed… the Welsh hotspots proving most popular with workers from Eastern Europe

More than 14,000 workers from the former Soviet bloc countries have registered with Welsh authorities over the past three years. Official figures from the Home Office released on 3 May 2007 provided a fascinating snapshot of the extent of migration from Eastern Europe.

But while the figures show which of the 22 local authorities has proved most popular with migrant workers, they do not include either self-employed workers such as the proverbial Polish plumber, workers who have not registered with officials, or children and dependants.

Wales’ migration hotspots for Eastern Europeans were revealed as Carmarthenshire (2,286 or 1.3% of population), Newport (2,197 or 1.6%) and Wrexham (2,130 or 1.6%).
