Abstract:

The full spectrum of political colours, academic theories and expert opinions are ranged in this collection of essays on the future of the European Union and the UK’s role in it. The strong message running through all the contributions is the need for a more vigorous, and better informed debate about the difficult choices facing the UK.

Amongst the contributions the reader will find those relating the history of the European project seeking to use that as a way to plan ahead. All contributors are British with first hand experience of the European Union and its institutions, earnestly trying to drive ahead the debate from a UK perspective. There are viewpoints from the pro-EU and anti-Euro alliances. The question of democratic deficit is addressed together with the case for a Social Europe and for an Economic Europe. Reform of the institutions and the control of bureaucratic power feature in some of the essays. The pace and the extent to which European integration might be taken is explored with views expressed as to the viability of the UK ‘jumping ship’.

The work will interest anyone with more than a passing interest in European affairs and the role of the UK in an increasingly wider European Union.
