Airlines are allocated slots according to their previous use, through the ‘Grandfather Rights’ rule. This note shows that while this system impacts negatively on aircraft size, through phenomena known as ‘slot hoarding’ and ‘slot babysitting’, this impact is mitigated by the increase in traffic which brings about operation of larger aircraft. |
